Really how good is the Eon?

The word "Eon" literally means "life", or to "live forever." Whether the Hyundai group will really succeed in making this model immortal, is for time to see.

Hyundai has stated that this model is not in competition with the i10 or Santro, but in a league of its own. And it isn’t extremely hard to understand why.

The Eon comes with a styling quotient that is far superior to other cars in the same class. Design cues are sharper that the Maruti Alto K10, which really pales in comparison, despite the latter being  the market leader. Hyundai’s now famous “fluidic sculpture design” is clearly visible, with a plethora of light-catching creases and lines. The front bumper seems to flow into the wheel arches, with wheels having smart wheel covers, making them appear as alloys.

Headlights on the vehicle are in the usual hexagonal shape, but what is noteworthy on its dashboard is a first-of-its-kind “Gear Shift Indicator”, the small screen that suggests ideal shift points to obtain best fuel economy. The glove box in the dash is also rather large, and front door pockets have bottle holders. Additionally, the boot space is good, at 219 litres.

The engine in this hatchback is 1.1 litre petrol, same as the i10 but with a cylinder less. It delivers maximum power output of 55 bhp. However, after driving, one feels that this isn’t really a car that likes to be revved. Though the ride quality is good due to Mc Pherson struts on the front suspension, one really has to plan in advance in order to overtake slower vehicles on the highway.

Mileages delivered by this hot hatch are 21 kmpl on the highway and 15 kmpl in the city, as per ARAI. To deliver this, the Eon is equipped with an Alternate Management System(AMS), targeted at Indian customers for fuel efficient driving,  At prices ranging from Rs 3.25 lakhs (on road, Mumbai) to Rs 4.25 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai), Hyundai sure has a mouth watering deal in its kitty. At this price, it sure seems to be giving Maruti and other small car players sleepless nights.

The Hyundai Eon is available in 6 variants- D-Lite, D-Lite Optional, Magna, Magna Optional, Sportz and Era.
