Does Stingray have the Sting in it?

Maruti has removed the name WagonR while bringing out its new vehicle christened as the Sting ray, on 21st August 2013. This Maruti car which was historically famous for being a convenient transporter and a fuel efficient tallboy has now been given a lifestyle moniker, in the form of Sting ray. Take a look at the picture below yourself and get an idea of what I am talking about here.

The setting for this launch event was made at an interesting lounge created in the Maruti Brand Centre in New Delhi. Amidst an afternoon of mocktails, gorgeous models, a beautiful hostess (Archana who hosted shows on Neo Cricket) and great music by a local band, the new Sting ray was launched. It was the first time that I had been treated to a launch in such an innovative way, I must comment here.

Getting to the car.. Well, there is no change to the heart of this vehicle. It still gets the 68 ps petrol engine that fits perfectly well in the current WagonR, generating a torque of 90Nm. However, it will deliver a claimed hgh mileage of 20.51 kmpl. Significant changes have been made to the exteriors and the interior. For one, the car looks positively premium and aggressive now. Headlamps are shaped like tubes at the front, with the gleaming Suzuki logo in between. The air dam below distinguishes this vehicle from others and is certainly not visible on most other wagons. Even the tail lamps appear to have used a higher dose of clear lens than earlier. Alloy wheels are standard on all variants of the Stingray.

On the inside, a greater number of cubby holes and convenient storage spaces can be seen on the left side of the dashboard. Plastic is distinctly of a higher quality than the current WagonR. Overall dimensions of the cabin have not been changed.

It appears that Maruti is attempting a different brand positioning strategy for the Stingray. It will be available in 3 different variants. The following are the prices of the same:

Stingray LXi- 409,999
Stingray VXi- 437,999
Stingray VXi (O)- 466,999  (All prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi)

Let us wait and watch to see whether the Stingray can deliver the STING in this troubled Indian market. Maruti has announced that it will not be discontinuing the present WagonR to make way for this model.
